My Love For MyZone, More Than A Heart Rate Monitor

Good Afternoon All!

I decided it was about time I talked a little bit about my love for MyZone. I’m sure after this post you will be looking into this super cool technology for yourselves and/or asking for it at your local gym!

my MyZone belt

my MyZone belt

I was first introduced to MyZone as a Kosama member. Kosama started implementing the MyZone technologies in their facilities about a year ago.

How Does It Work?

Users purchase a MyZone belt and wear it as they would any other heart rate monitor while they work out

While exercising the user’s data is either stored in the belt’s memory or displayed live if at a MyZone enabled facility.

Stored data can be uploaded wirelessly once a user visits a MyZone enabled facility

After an exercise or an upload a confirmation email is sent to the user.

User’s login to their account to view tracking tools, set up personal goals and participate in competitions.

What Makes It Great

The MyZone technology is really at its best when displayed live at a facility. Each user pops up on the screen when wearing their belt in their own little bubble. Users identifying their bubble with a nickname of their choice the picked during the registration process. So what is so cool about this bubble? The bubble displays the users heart rate, % of maximum heart rate, calories burned and MEPs. The displayed data helps both the user and the instructor.

The user can see where their heart rate is at so they know whether to pick up the pace or catch their breath a bit. Because their belt is individually tailored to their height, weight and gender they get a personalized display of how their body is working. The belt will adjust with the user over time as their resting heart rate adjusts, and their fitness level changes.

1209397_10151558853376739_699344344_nThe bubbles are also color-coded according to heart rate zones. With gray being the lowest followed by blue, green, yellow and finally red. These color-coded zones help both user and instructor. Kosama has utilized these colors as they write their programing so users know at every point during their workout what color zone they should aim to be in. Furthermore the colors allow the trainer to get an accurate read of how their class is doing. Are they working hard? too hard? or not hard enough? This lets the trainer make modifications as they teach and also allows them to cue different exercises or modifications for those in different zones, so each and every user can get their best workout in.

my MEPS PR

my MEPS PR

For any users who are worried about their heart rate info being visible to others, they can choose to remove their bubble from the screen, though I have found while some members were concerned about this at first most are no longer worried. Because the belts are tailored to you and your fitness level, everyone is solely competing against themselves and their own personal best and thus are on a fairly level playing field.

For instance this picture shows my PR for MEPs thus far, but if you look at my calories and MEPs in my PR compared to my calories in MEPs from last night’s kickboxing class you can see that my belt has adjusted since I obtained my PR. I would no have to burn more calories to get the same number of MEPs. This is some really smart technology! Check back in for another post on MyZone this week and their cool scale the Tanita!

Have you used MyZone?

Foam Rollers

After Wednesday’s Lululemon Sweat On Us sponsored class at Spark Barre, Pilates and Yoga I have come to the conclusion that I definitely need to invest in a foam roller. I’d only used a foam roller once before during a barre class, and if I wasn’t smitten before I definitely am now.

Thursday night as I lie in bed after a class that combined kettlebells, body bars and TRX, I was wishing I had roller of my own so I could roll that soreness right out. Look for a blog post as I determine which roller to buy and find some resources for stretches with the foam roller.

Curious about that top-secret goal of mine?

While I can’t yet reveal my top-secret dream goal, I can say I have been working hard on it these past two weeks, and the work has only made me want this goal even more. Right now I’m working hard to remain patient and confident as I wait to see the next steps ahead for me. I really think achieving this goal would go a long way in helping me achieve my journey to healthy, happy and balanced. I’ll keep you posted!

Last but not least transitioning to the Fit Farm Wife

You may have noticed changes over on my Facebook page and the header here on my blog. I have decided to transition from my original blog name, The Unexpected Farm Wife, to the Fit Farm Wife. Why the change?

  • I’m discovering that fitness is one of my main topics and Fit Farm Wife illustrates that from the get go
  • In reserving my social channels, I realized that “The Unexpected Farm Wife” was really too long if I wanted to keep my branding consist across social media

What does the change mean for my readers? Not much, except there is now one name to remember FitFarmWife. You will find me on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest all at FitFarmWife. Also, I am in the process of moving my blog to my new domain fitfarmwife.com and hope to have the switch complete by the end of the month.

Screen Shot 2013-09-04 at 5.28.31 PMZulily

Zulily calls itself the daily deals site for Mom, babies and kids. I am not a Mom, so you may be wondering what drew me to this site. While the site does offer a lot of deals for the kiddos, occasionally they offer some sales on active wear (I know you are shocked right?). Brands I’ve seen featured on Zulily include Lucy, Ellie and Manduka.

Where do you find the best deals?

I was so excited to visit the outlet mall over my Labor Day weekend, but I was super bummed by their selection. Guess I’ll be sticking to the web!

Running Naked

Tonight I ran naked in 100 degree weather with a group of what I guess you could now call friends I mean we ran naked together, I mean bare we ran bare. Got your attention did I?

Merrell shoes put on a demo for the Lemon Sole Run Club at the Lululemon Des Moines Showroom. I stopped by and learned an awful lot considering I’m not much of a runner! It was a small turnout but that just meant I got to ask more questions and get to know everyone a little bit better.

Two reps where there from Merrell shoes who gave us all the low down on the different styles and specs of each shoe as well as a small clinic on what barefoot running is.

The first pair of shoes I tried on were the

Women’s Barefoot Trail Run Ascend Glove

  • 0mm Drop – meaning no drop from heel to toe
  • 6mm cushion
  • TrailProtect pad in the forefoot and heel offers support for rough terrains
  • Vibram® outsole- same outsole used on Five Fingers Shoes
  • Vegan friendly

The second pair where

  • 0mm Drop – meaning no drop from heal to toe
  • 8mm cushion
  • Vibram® Pods

These were the pair I ended up taking out for a spin a.k.a. mini run. They were nice and light (really every pair was!). From talking with the Merrell reps I discovered that many people enjoying wearing these shoes for other activities in addition to running including weight lifting and CrossFit as well as elliptical training and casual wear. Hmmm I would love to put a pair through a Kosama class or two! I know I would feel it in my calves.

The third pair I tried on where Merrell’s original barefoot shoe called something Pace. I couldn’t find the exact pair I tried on tonight on their website. This pair was definitely the lightest and most minimalist pair I tried. I wasn’t really feeling them maybe after I gradually graduated down I would be ready, but my ankle I had injured earlier this summer felt funny just putting them on. Who knows could just be me. Also, I’m no running expert or even a runner. Though I hope one day I’ll learn. Any tips for learning this whole pacing thing? Oh ya, and that whole breathing thing too?

Cool specs about all of the shoes; they can be worn barefoot or with socks and are machine washable.

Do you wear Merrell’s?

What kind of shoes do you run in?

What kind of shoes do you lift in?

Weekend Recap- Poker Run Plus Checking In On Those Goals

Happy Monday All!

It’s a hot one here in Iowa today and looks like that will be continuing through the week. No complaints from me though!

A started my weekend off right teaching a kickboxing class at Kosama on Friday night. Saturday morning it was back to 7 Flags and Kosama to witness a Kosama first….

A proposal!  Our GM, Kamy got engaged after Saturday morning circuit to her best friend : ). They met at Kosama so he thought they should get engaged there too! My favorite part was that he had to take off her weight lifting glove to put the ring on her finger. Congrats to the newly engaged couple!

That afternoon we reported back for a little poker run fun, a 17 mile bike ride with 5 pub stops to draw a card at each location and maybe have a little fun too. It was a beautiful day and so fun to hang out with some of my fellow Kosamies.

I think we will definitely have to do an event like this again next year! I loved getting to put the new bike to work and my friends were so helpful teaching me how to shift. My road bike is quite different from my mountain bike I was used to riding.

Sunday was dedicated to some much needed rest and relaxation as well as brunch with my Mom and sometime spent reading my book. I’ve almost finished The Cuckoo’s Calling.

Accountability Check In

In case you forgot I set these goals for 25.

IMG_1015

I think if I had to give myself a grade overall so far it would be a C, maybe even a C-. Which is exactly why I’m checking in, so I can get myself back on track!

Incorporating 2 lifting days a week – I’m always getting one day a week in but I would like to get in a better leg day utilizing the bar for squats etc.

Blog at least 2x a week- I’m doing pretty good at this though I think my last few posts have been a little lack luster.

Attend Fitbloggin’ Conference- I’ve done some research on this, still no details as to where it will be held next year.

Get Certified- Decisions, decisions. I will put a deadline to have a decision on what certification to obtain first by Oct. 1. BOOM

Continue search for happy & balance – its a daily thing my friends!

Top secret – Ahhhh! I’m a nervous Nelly! I have something to do with this tomorrow, stay tuned. Prayers appreciated

How are you coming on your goals?

What did you do this weekend?
